So, you want to create a new name?
Something flashy. Something cool. Something to get you noticed?
Or perhaps you're just tired of being called 'A Player'.

There are a number of resources online to help you create a new name. Before we get to that though, let's look at the basics of naming yourself in MegaTF.

Part A: Changing to a new silver name while connected to a server

Okay, it's time for something different. Let's change your name to something original, rather than simply being called 'A Player'.

  1. Join a game. (If you've never connected to a game before, click on 'How Do I Join a Game of MegaTF?' on the left side of this page for instructions).
  2. Open the console. You can do this by hitting the tilde ~ or single quote ' key. It's usually located in the top-left part of your keyboard. It's beside the number one on my keyboard. A screen of text should drop over the top half of your game when you've found the right key.
  3. Once the console is open, you can enter a wide variety of commands, modifying your controls, character, or in this case, name. Type the following into the console to change your name:
  4. name "Your Name Here"

  5. Close the console by pressing the tilde ~ or single quote ' key again. The console should retract to the top of the screen, allowing you to see the whole game once again.

That's it. You're name has now been changed. You can change your name again at any time the same way. Now pick something clever to call yourself and start making friends - or enemies.

Part B: Creating a name you can 'exec' at different times

Any file you put in the MegaTF/fortress directory can be executed while in the game. What does that mean? Well, lets say you open notepad (or another text editor) and create a text file named the following:

joe.cfg

and saved it in the c:\megatf\fortress directory.

If you were to start the quakeworld client (see A. 1 for how to do so) and type:

exec joe.cfg

The game would try to process all the commands in that file.

Why does that matter? Well, think about when you play different classes. The commands you use when you're a soldier are different than the commands you use when you're a scout. By placing different commands into different files and running them at different times, you can change a large number of settings all at once.

If you look in the c:\MegaTF\Fortress directory, you'll find a config file for each class in MegaTF: scout.cfg, sniper.cfg, soldier.cfg, demoman.cfg, medic.cfg, hwguy.cfg, pyro.cfg, spy.cfg, and engineer.cfg.

In each of those files are different controls for each class. They execute automatically each time you change class, changing your controls automatically. Why am I telling you all this? Well, you can create similar config files with your own commands just as easily.

In this case, we're going to create one that will change your name.

  1. Open notepad. If you're using windows, click on the start button -> select programs -> accessories -> and finally select notepad. If you're not using windows, use nano or any other text editor.
  2. Enter the following into notepad:
  3. name "Your Name Here"

  4. Now, give this file a name you can remember, like:
  5. name.cfg

    and save this file in:

    C:\MegaTF\Fortress

  6. That's it. Close notepad (or your text editor) and start the quakeworld client (see A. 1 for how to do so).
  7. Type the following:

exec name.cfg (or exec whatever_name_you_used.cfg)

Your name should change automatically. You can now open the console and exec this name file at any time.

Part C: Changing to a new, multicolored name

So you're tired of the plain silver name?

I don't blame ya. Now that we've covered the fundamentals, we can look at making multicolored names.

We're going to do exactly what you did in Part B, except that instead of typing a new name, we're going to copy and paste several special charaters in.

  1. Open notepad. If you're using windows, click on the start button -> select programs -> accessories -> and finally select notepad. If you're not using windows, use nano or any other text editor.
  2. Open your web browser, and go here:
  3. http://quakeworld.com/quake_names/OQNM4/frames.html

You'll be taken to a screen where you can create you own name on the web.

Click on the text above and create a name you like.

  4. When you're happy with how your new name looks, locate the white box at the bottom of the screen. It has a large 'Your name' label above it.
  5. Highlight all the text in the white box.
  6. While the text in the white box is highlighted, click on the 'Edit' menu of your browser and select 'Copy'.
  7. Close your web browser, and return to notepad.
  8. Type the following into notepad:
  9. name "

  10. Now, select the 'Edit' menu in notepad and select 'Paste'. Several strage characters (or black boxes) should follow.
  11. Add a double quote " to the end of your name.
  12. Finally, give this file a name you can remember, like:
  13. myname.cfg

    and save this file in:

    C:\MegaTF\Fortress

  14. That's it. To test your new name, close notepad (or your text editor) and join a game.
  15. Then, type the following:
  16. exec myname.cfg (or exec whatever_name_you_used.cfg)

Your name should change automatically. You can now open the console and exec this name file at any time.

  17. Connect to a server to see your new name online.

Good luck, and happy naming!
